Know Your Rights as an Immigrant in Texas
Understanding your legal rights is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and your family.
This page is provided as a community resource by HAAET.
What to Do If Immigration Officers Come to Your Home
You have rights regardless of your immigration status. If immigration officers come to your door:
- You do not have to open the door unless they have a signed judicial warrant.
- You have the right to remain silent.
- Do not sign any documents without speaking to a legal representative first.
- If you are arrested, you have the right to contact a lawyer.
- Call HAAET immediately: 903-595-0066.
Your Rights During an Immigration Stop
If you are stopped by law enforcement or immigration officers:
- Stay calm and do not run.
- You have the right to remain silent.
- Do not lie about your immigration status but you are not required to answer questions.
- Do not sign anything without understanding what you are signing.
- Ask for a lawyer immediately if you are detained.
